PHOTOS: Thousands Line Main Street for Memorial Day Parade

The New Canaan community turned out in droves for the annual Memorial Day Parade, which made its way from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church to Lakeview Cemetery Monday morning. True to its theme of remembering “with gratitude and honor the proud men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces to protect and preserve a life of freedom for all Americans,” the parade was led down Main Street by members of the Exchange Club. who passed out thousands of flags, ensuring plenty of stars and stripes along the route for the nearly 30 groups parading after them. Following the parade, lifelong New Canaan resident Brian Vander Heyden served as the guest speaker at the ceremony in Lakeview Cemetery.

‘We Feel Blessed’: Through 10 Years, Gospel Garden at St. Mark’s Emerges as Vehicle for Shared Abundance

Before the Rev. Peter Walsh could process parishioner Brian Hollstein’s pitch to build a garden behind St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the crews were in the lot and the land was being cleared. It had been less than a day since Hollstein proposed his plan. Walsh liked the idea, so rather than think too much about the logistics, he surrendered and held on for the ride. On a recent afternoon, a thoughtful Walsh observed that the garden “yields so much more than just vegetables.”

“The garden has been fruitful in terms of community by being a place where people who wanted to be part of a good thing could collaborate and execute on that desire,” he said.

As Diana Siano and Pickie Rosemond Harvey-Smith made their way through The Village  at Waveny Care Center on a recent afternoon, they catch sight of handsome Harry Sharlach. “Harry! Oh Harry!” They swoon. Sharlach turns but it is too late: He vanishes into a cloud of kisses. Both Siano and Sharlach are part of a vast network of volunteers that bolsters the day-to-day care at Waveny LifeCare Network, where Harvey-Smith resides.
