Seatbelt Compliance Enforcement Campaign

From May 23 to June 5, our Department conducted intensive enforcement of seatbelt laws. Prior to the enforcement campaign, we gathered data regarding motorist compliance with seatbelt laws in our Town. The data showed a high compliance rate of 92 percent. At the completion of the enforcement campaign, we saw a 93.5 percent compliance rate. Since the state average is 85.4 percent compliance, we are glad that a high percentage of motorists in New Canaan are obeying seat belt laws.

New Canaan Police Chief: Risks and Consequences of Underage Substance Use

With college students home and the end of the New Canaan school year, our department usually sees an increase in youth parties involving underage alcohol and drug use. The risks and effects of underage drinking and illegal drug use include an increase in risky behavior. These behaviors often result in injuries, assaults, medical emergencies, fatalities, and sexual offenses. Consequently, to mitigate these risks we will continue to pursue an approach that balances education with enforcement. The New Canaan Perspective

The media and some adults (including parents) regard drinking (and recently the use of marijuana) as an essential element of socializing.
