New Canaan Police Chief: Beware of Phony Solicitations for Veterans as Memorial Day Approaches

On May 30, Memorial Day, we honor those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our great country. Memorial Day honors their service and sacrifice. Nearly 850 Veterans are buried in Lakeview Cemetery. As Memorial Day approaches, it’s a good time to remind the good and patriotic citizens of New Canaan to be aware of phony organizations who “solicit” on behalf of Veterans. Recently, Peter Langenus, the Commander of New Canaan’s Veterans of Foreign War Post 653 received a telephone call from a shopper who had been approached for a money donation in front of the Food Emporium.

Police Chief: Focus on Teen Driver Safety As Prom Approaches

Within the next two months, our town will host both Junior and Senior proms. All of those attending these proms are teen drivers who are relatively inexperienced. Consequently, we must all work together on ensuring our teen drivers are well-trained, safe and informed. Our teen drivers face a number of safety challenges including:

Teenage drivers are involved in more crashes per mile than drivers of any other age group. Drivers aged 16 to 17 are involved in about seven times as many crashes per mile driven compared to drivers in their forties, fifties or sixties. Teenage drivers are overrepresented in crashes that result in the death of other people, such as their passengers, pedestrians or occupants of other vehicles.

Police Chief: Protecting Yourself Against Identity Theft

One of our Department’s goals for 2016 is to reduce the amount of fraud victims in New Canaan. We will do this by broadening our efforts to educate the community and by arresting those that prey on our residents. In 2015, our Department investigated 167 incidents of fraud and many of these incidents were identify theft. Some of these instances of identity theft occurred because vehicles or homes were left unlocked and thieves stole both credit cards, banking information and the owner’s identity. What is Identity Theft? Identity theft involves acquiring key pieces of people’s identifying information in order to impersonate them or utilize their financial resources.

NCPD Command Staff: Thanking Those Who ‘Protect and Serve’

Moreover, our new Department mission statement is: “To Protect and Serve our community with courage, professionalism and integrity.” Our officers fulfill this mission each and every day. New Canaan is Exceptionally Safe

Although New Canaan is an exceptionally safe Town for our residents, due in large part to the work of our officers, it is not so safe for our officers. We have no doubt that our Town enjoys a very low crime rate due to the tireless work of our officers.
