The new Core Burn Pilates studio will be located on 142 Elm St., currently a vacant space. The previous occupant was a retail store, Lilly Pulitzer (now at 78 Elm).

Founded in 2010 by Tamara Slupchynskyj—a co-owner of the New Canaan location—Core Burn Pilates has 12 studios across Connecticut including Greenwich, north Greenwich, Rowayton and Westport, according to the business’s website. The company also has studios in New York and North Carolina.

“We look forward to opening in New Canaan later this summer,” Co-Owner Lorena Egan Alvarado told NewCanaanite.com in an email. “Many of our clients who currently practice with us at our Rowayton studio are New Canaan residents, so when we saw the space on Elm was available, we knew it was the right space, right community and the right time.”

A fully women-owned and -operated business, Core Burn instructs in Classical and Contemporary Pilates, fusing “Classical Pilates Principles and dynamic Contemporary exercises with technical, hands-on teaching techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to help our clients meet their personal goals,” Egan Alvarado said.

The business has filed with the Planning & Zoning Commission for a change of use. Under the New Canaan Zoning Regulations, service establishments are permitted in the Retail A zone with site plan approval as long as a retail component faces the street and occupies a certain amount of the commercial space (see page 78 here). P&Z is expected to take up the application at its regular meeting Tuesday night.

In her memo to the Commission, Town Planner Sarah Carey said that Core Burn has agreed to sell “various types of merchandise within the front 15 feet of the unit.”

In saying P&Z should support the application, Carey noted that “[t]he Commission has approved similar first-floor uses in the past; the most comparable example is Stretch Lab on Main Street, across from Town Hall.”

Egan Alvarado said that Core Pilates welcomes those “interested in strengthening your core, recovering from injury or curious about Pilates altogether.”

“Our team is committed to guiding your Pilates practice so you leave each session feeling longer, leaner, and stronger,” she said. “We promise you will feel the difference working with us.”

A Core Burn Pilates had opened in New Canaan in 2020 and closed amid the pandemic the following year. In opening a New Canaan location, Core Burn joins a local market that includes Nearwater Pilates on Grove Street and Club Pilates on Main Street.

Core Burn prides itself “on the intentional practice of movement that Pilates offers,” Egan Alvarado said.

“Our instructors are not simply running through choreography,” she said. “They are instructing each session with an expert understanding of Pilates principles, biomechanics, and functional movement.”

The studio will offer “various classes and sessions to meet the needs and abilities of our clients, whether that is recovering from a surgery, elevating their golf game, or strengthening their core to improve their posture, longevity, and overall well-being.”

“We have a session for every type of client, too,” Egan Alvarado said. “We believe Pilates should be accessible and welcoming for all. Our private and semi-private sessions are for clients who are interested in a bespoke session tailored to their unique needs or goals. We also offer intimate group classes for the client who enjoys feeding off the energy of other Pilates practitioners.”

Slupchynskyj herself trained with a renowned Pilates elder, Lolita San Miguel, who trained directly with Joseph Pilates “and is one of only two students ever certified by him,” said Egan Alavarado, a Juilliard graduate and retired professional dancer.
