Congratulations to New Canaan resident Scott Ericson of The Advocate of Stamford, and GametimeCT, on winning two awards for his coverage of sports in Connecticut.

He won the 2019 Connecticut American Legion Media Award for his coverage of American Legion baseball across the state. He also won the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association 2019 “Bo Kolinsky News Media Award” given to the top sports writer covering high school soccer in the state. Ericson is a 1993 graduate of New Canaan High School and lives in town with his wife Kristen and their two children, Jack and Sam.

Bankwell Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Laura Waitz announced three promotions at the local bank:

Flo Carbone has been named Vice President, Branch Manager of the banks Elm Street branch in New Canaan. A Stamford resident, Carbone joined Bankwell in 2014 and has more than 18 years’ experience in banking. Yamil Ceballos has been promoted to Assistant Treasurer, Assistant Branch Manager of the banks 208 Elm Street branch in New Canaan. Ceballos is a New Canaan resident and joined Bankwell in 2018 as a Customer Service Representative. Lucy French has been promoted to Vice President, Marketing Manager. A Norwalk resident, French joined the bank in 2013. In her role as Vice President, Marketing Manager, she is responsible for all Marketing efforts as well as internal and external communications across the Bank, public relations, advertising, media, brand awareness, events and community relations.

The owners of Mackenzie’s failed this month to pay $8,100 in rent, according to a complaint filed Monday in state Superior Court. Mackenzie’s was scheduled to close this week, according to a note in its window that cited “high rent prices,” among other reasons. Sieh Washington had signed a five-year lease on the commercial space at 7 South Ave., according to the eviction complaint filed on behalf of RB Property Group LLC.

The New Canaan Artisans and Friends are knitting protective pouches for koalas, kangaroos, and other wildlife affected by the wild fires in Australia. More than 1 billion animal lives have been lost. The group is helping to protect those who have been displaced or injured.

New Canaan-based First Candle has appointed Brian Scruton to its Board of Directors. The nonprofit organization seeks to eliminate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and other sleep-related infant deaths, while providing bereavement support for families who have suffered a loss. Scruton, a Cornell University graduate and Fairfield resident, is a director in Cushman & Wakefield’s Leasing Services Group in Stamford.

“Grit and victory ruled the courts this weekend for the 6th Grade Girls Basketball Team who won two back-to-back, nail-biting games against Westport 6th Grade Girls 28-26 and 25-20 (details below). This team is led by long-time NC Basketball Association middle-school coach, Tim O’Reilly, and his assistant coach, Lauren Doyle. Game details: Saturday, January 25 FCBL League Game 28-26 (played at St. Luke’s, New Canaan); Sunday, January 26, Non-League Game 25-20 (played at Long Lots Elementary, Westport).

“The Chargers swept the weekend defeating the Greenwich B/G 5B, Darien YMCA Blue 5B, and Stamford JCC 5B teams.”
