New Canaan Police at about 2:48 p.m. on July 28 were dispatched to the former Beval Saddlery building at 50 Pine St. in a report of vandalism to the structure and its interior, officials said. Fire extinguishers had been discharged, with white powder blanketing the floors, and windows had been broken. Police are investigating.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to approve two contracts less than $10,000. Obtained by NewCanaanite.com through a public records request, the contracts cover:

  • $3,970 for New Canaan-based Gannon Rustic Fence LLC for “labor and materials to remove and replace cedar fence on the west side” of the former Outback Teen Center building’
  • $2,500 renewal with Herndon, Va.-based All Traffic Solutions Inc. for “equipment management, reporting, image management, alerts and mapping.”

Bankwell donated $10,000 to the Carver Foundation of Norwalk that went toward extending the school year for Carver students by three weeks. The donation allowed kids virtual access to Carver teachers and staff that allowed them to receive the extra support they needed to not fall behind academically, officials said. “The structured time with the students also benefited parents who continue to juggle multiple priorities during this time,” a press release said.

Police at 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 1 cited a 23-year-old Bridgeport man for motor vehicle and marijuana offenses after stopping him on Silvermine Road after he crossed a double yellow line near Carter Street. At 12:01 p.m. on Aug. 3, police cited a 20-year-old Bridgeport man for similar infraction-level offenses after stopping him on South Avenue for failing to have a front license plate.

The New Canaan Community Foundation in its fourth round of grants awarded through the COVID-19 Response Fund focused on child care and summer options for youth: ABC of New Canaan ($2,500), All Our Kin ($20,000), Carver Foundation of Norwalk )$5,000), Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County ($20,000), Family Centers ($2,500), INTEMPO ($5,000), LiveGirl ($1,500), New Canaan Community YMCA ($5,000) and Women’s Mentoring Network ($5,000).

The selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to appoint Michael Bopp to the Technology Advisory Committee. The appointment was added to the selectmen’s agenda during the meeting and his resume was not immediately available.

Town officials this week put a press release that said, “Due to the COVID pandemic, the Town of New Canaan has changed the process for purchasing Transfer Station Annual Permits to an online process. The permit purchase application can now be completed online any time of the day at the Town website www.newcanaan.info. From the top of the homepage, one should click on Departments, then click on Transfer Station under Public Works, and follow the instructions to apply online, provide the information requested and pay for the permit.”
