The Board of Education during its regular meeting Monday morning held a moment of silence to honor and remember Teddy Balkind, a former South School student who died Jan. 6 after sustaining an injury while playing in a St. Luke’s School ice hockey game. Board of Ed Chair Katrina Parkhill said, “Our close-knit community is heartbroken and devastated by the tragic loss of this bright young man, one of our own.It is difficult to find words to express the tremendous grief and sorrow this community is feeling, and the depth of sympathy we have for his family, and for all those who knew and loved Teddy. we will continue to keep St. Luke’s School, Brunswick School, the hockey community and New Canaan community close to our hearts and in our thoughts and prayers. We that the big heart of this small town will continue to offer an outpouring of love and support for Teddy’s family, friends, classmates and teammates.”

Planet New Canaan‘s Christmas Tree collection ended this week with 648 trees mulched by the town of New Canaan and 20 trees delivered to Mianus River Park in Stamford for riverbank restoration led by the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The Christmas Tree Recycling was sponsored by the New Canaan DPW and the Exchange Club of New Canaan. The event’s success was thanks to volunteers from NCHS SLOBs, who will also be spreading the mulch at New Canaan Nature Center in the near future.

This week, Fire Commissioner Beth Jones, while offering to support the Fire Department during a budget presentation before the Board of Selectmen scheduled for later this month, said, “Although I’m not sure how popular I am with our first selectman, it might be better not to.” Jones appeared to be referring to an active ethics investigation regarding a complaint lodged against First Selectman Kevin Moynihan where she’d been listed as a witness. Fire Commission Chair Jack Horner, responding to Jones during the appointed body’s regular meeting Tuesday, said, “Well, Commissioner Jones, you are a former selectman and I think we would all appreciate your not only presence but wisdom, if you will. And there is more than one selectman.”

Two handwritten signs bearing only the words “Dog Found” and a Miami, Fla. phone number appeared recently on utility poles on Talmadge Hill Road and Charter Oak Drive. It’s unclear whether it’s a scam. The phone number appears to redirect to a generic voicemail account.
