New Canaan Police on Monday afternoon received a report of a vehicle being entered by juveniles. No items were taken from the vehicles, and the matter is being handled by the juveniles’ parents and a NCPD youth sergeant, officials said.

Congratulations to the New Canaan High School girls ice hockey team on winning a state championship Wednesday night, topping Darien 4-3 in a triple-overtime thriller.

Here’s the game-winning goal from senior Kaleigh Harden—a team co-captain together with Grace Crowell, Caitlin Tully and Jade Lowe—and ensuing celebration:

The win capped an unbeaten season for the Rams. 

Goalie Nikki Ferraro—the only freshman girls ice hockey player in Connecticut to earn both all-county and all-state honors—finished with 40 saves.

The Board of Education prior to its regular meeting Monday held a moment of silence to remember and honor lifelong resident and Recreation Director Steve Benko. Chair Katrina Parkhill called Benko a “longtime friend to the New Canaan Public Schools and always willing to help and support our schools in every way.” “I personally, and many others in our schools, worked with Steve for many years and we will all miss him very much,” she said.

Waveny LifeCare Network has announced the launch of its Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA) School at 3 Farm Road. “The goal of this new initiative is to recruit and train the next generation of nursing professionals through an extensive six-week training, apprenticeship, and mentoring program that is fully subsidized and provides full-time employment opportunities for all participants within the Waveny LifeCare Network,” the nonprofit organization said in a press release.

Charlie Firneno, a Saxe Middle School sixth-grader, took advantage of the snow days in January and first built a LEGO Ferrari 488 GTE, then decided to “motorize” it by adding motors and coding a mobile app to remotely control his modified LEGO Ferrari with an iPhone. He even added LED lights so that he could switch the car’s headlights on and off with a phone.

People should know that most New Canaan school buses are equipped with cameras which provide the police with both stills and videos clearly showing the front and back license plates of vehicles which pass illegally. The fine for a first offense is $450.00. For a subsequent offense the penalty can be a $500 to $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail. The safety of a child is, of course, priceless.
