The New Canaan Community Foundation saw record turnout for its annual grant recipients event Wednesday at Grace Farms, with $712,700 in grants awarded to 92 nonprofit organizations in New Canaan and neighboring communities. NCCF anticipates investing nearly $2 million in the community this year.

Waveny LifeCare Network announced last week that Therapeutic Recreation Leader Maria Franco-Gallagher has been awarded the Aging Services Award of Excellence, Honorable Mention, by Leading Age Connecticut. “Maria epitomizes the dedication, creativity, energy and care that drives Waveny’s greater good for our residents, patients, families and staff, often placing their needs above her own,” officials say. “This is Maria’s calling, not just her work. Maria transitioned from our Adult Day Program to work with our residents during the most challenging days of Covid-19, donning PPE, courageously and attentively engaging our Memory Care Residents who were particularly affected by Covid’s forced isolation. Despite the dangers and daunting grief and loss, Maria continued to persevere and share moments of connection and joy with those in her care.”

The First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan has announced an addition to its staff, Stephanie L. Hare, as new Director of Family Ministries. A Massachusetts native who has lived most of her life in Westchester County, she’s a graduate of Manhattanville College and earned a master’s degree in Irish Studies from The Catholic University of America as well as a certificate in Youth & Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. Prior to serving at FPCNC, Steph served as the Director of Youth and Intergenerational Ministries at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown, N,Y. for seven years. She also worked in development and administration in several non-profit organizations as well as in technical theater.

Congratulations to Serena Platt, a senior at New Canaan High School, on being awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter N of New Canaan, Connecticut. Platt is an editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, is on the tennis and squash teams, and co-founder of Musical Moments, a nonprofit bringing music to 17 senior living facilities. She will attend the University of Virginia in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
