Here’s a write-up from New Canaan’s Keith Richey about the annual Rich-Mich Softball game, won this year by the Michno Marauders, 12-11:

L-R: standing: Bill Acker, John Doherty, Stephen von Jena, John Fulkerson, Brian Skinner, Keith Richey, Brad Acker, Alan Sharpe, Tim Michno, Steve McCardell, Roger Saunders, Will Fornshell, Andrew Weitzel, Chas Timberlake, Rick DeNey, Mickey Stayman, Rick Coyle. Bottom row: John Moore, Marc Toland.

“The 26th Annual Rich-Mich Softball Game was held at Waveny Park on Sunday, September 17th. Playing for the Michno Marauders were: Bill Acker, Rick DeNey, Steve McCardell, Will Fornshell, Roger Saunders, Mickey Stayman, Chas Timberlake, Andrew Weitzel, and captain Tim Michno. Playing for the Recidivists were: Brad Acker, Rick Coyle, John Doherty, John Fulkerson, John Moore, Alan Sharpe, Brian Skinner, Marc Toland, Stephen von Jena and captain Keith Richey. Jack Larkin was pinch-runner for both teams. This once-a-year multigenerational softball game has become a New Canaan tradition. The teams are picked at random.

“It was a seesaw battle from the start to the finish. The Recidivists broke out early, leading 1-0 at the end of the first inning and that score held up until the third inning when the Recidivists scored another four runs while the Marauders scored two runs thus it was 5-2 in favor of the Recidivists at the end of three innings. The Marauders scored two runs to make it 5-4 at the end of the fourth inning. Then the Marauders scored another three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning giving them a 7-5 lead. The Recidivists scored two runs in the sixth inning and held the Marauders scoreless so it was 7-7 at the end of six innings. In the seventh and final inning, the Recidivists scored four runs to take what appeared to be a commanding 11-7 lead but then the Recidivists defense gave way allowing the Marauders to keep chipping away and score five runs to win the game in a walk off, 12-11.

“The big hitters for the Recidivists were Brad Acker, who had two home runs driving in 8 runs; and Marc Toland, John Moore, John Fulkerson, and John Doherty provided steady hitting. For the Marauders, Andrew Weitzel and Mickey Stayman had key hits in the 7th inning rally, Steve McCardell drove in the winning run with a line drive to left center, and Chas Timberlake hit 4 for 5 and drove in a couple of runs. On the defensive side, Andrew Weitzel made 5 or 6 crucial flyball catches roaming from his post at shortstop, and several putouts at first base. For the Recidivists, Marc Toland and Brad Acker anchored the defense with some great plays.

A great time was had by all, and the post-game celebrations assuaged any letdown from the final tally. Looking forward to the next quarter century of Rich-Mich Softball!”
