A Walk & Talk with select exhibiting artists from the 73rd A-ONE exhibition will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Silvermine Galleries. The show highlights the diversity of work that is currently being made by established and emerging artists. “Established in 1949 as the New England Exhibition, a regional exhibit, it later became known as Art of the Northeast and is now a national exhibition,” organizers say. “It features a wide range of collectible contemporary artwork that is both vibrant and surprising. Silvermine’s signature exhibition has featured the work of many prominent artists including Louise Nevelson, Elaine de Kooning, and Milton Avery, and jurors have included major critics, curators, and directors from influential art institutions.” Participating artists include Beatrice Bonanno, Cecily Cowburn Anderson, Katherine Evans, Heide Follin, Constance Keller, Brigid Kennedy, Jodi Steifel and Lawre Stone.

  1. Driving to Scotts Corners for cannabis? Sixty years ago it was common for New Canaan teens to drive to the Vista Market for beer when the age in NY was 18 as opposed to 21 in CT. If you peruse old copies of the NCHS yearbook you’ll see references to certain thirsty seniors as “Ridgerunner # 2,” “Ridgerunner # 4,” etc.

    • To drink legally in NY back those 60 years ago was actually a two step process. First step after turning 18 was to register with the Selective Service for the military draft, and receiving your draft card. Step two was driving across the state line at Vista to the Vista Market or the Hearth and purchasing your first legal beverage with your new draft card.
