Congratulations to New Canaan EMS on being named the 2024 Volunteer Agency of the Year by the Connecticut State EMS Advisory Board for excellence in all areas of emergency medical care. New Canaan EMS will mark the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2025.
And heartfelt congratulations to our friend Bonnie Rumilly, a 24-year veteran of New Canaan EMS, on earning the 2024 Connecticut EMS Supporter of the Year Award (The Gerald Ferrari Award).
“This is the highest award given to a single individual and the winner is chosen for high impact and commitment to EMS at the hospital, state, and local level,” EMS officials said in a press release. “Bonnie joined New Canaan EMS in 2000 at the age of 17, completed the CT EMT Certification course while attending New Canaan High School, and being the main caregiver or her elderly, health challenged grandfather. She says that each of the many times that she had to call 9-1-1 for Grandpa, she was so grateful for the professional, yet gentle care given to him. As soon as she was age-eligible, Bonnie joined NCEMS (Grandpa was so very proud of her), attended classes and completed all of her requirements – all while attending NCHS. When awarded a college scholarship, she majored in Psychology, then went on to earn her master’s of Social Work– all while still riding her weekly ambulance shift and fulfilling leadership roles in the organization. Fast forward to now…Bonnie is a wife, mother, trauma therapist with her own private practice and one of the Clinical Directors of the Fairfield County Trauma Response Team, Inc. This team of clinical mental health professionals helps First Responders, including but not limited to local Police, Fire, EMS and Dispatch agencies. The Team was founded in the aftermath of Newtown. Bonnie works every day with those who work every day for all of us. New Canaan EMS is a ‘family’ of people committed to the health and safety of our community every hour of every day. Bonnie exemplifies the best in all of us.”
