A group that favors the recently adopted ban on summertime use of gas-powered leaf blowers, called “Quiet New Canaan,” has launched its own website in support of the measure. The group is urging electors to vote ‘Yes’ in the July 25 referendum. (New Canaanite will run letters related to the referendum through July 22.)

Alexandra Allen
Congratulations to 2018 New Canaan High School graduate Alexandra Nina-Kathryn Allen on earning a Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. Allen graduated summa cum laude and Beta Sigma Kappa, a designation for students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement. During her time at SCO, the Duke University grad served as a student ambassador.

Alyssa Menz
Congratulations to Alyssa Menz, a Ph.D. candidate at the Yale School of the Environment on being selected to receive a $25,000 P.E.O. Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 2026. She was nominated by P.E.O. Chapter F-AC based in New Canaan. Established in 1991, the scholar program provides substantial merit-based awards for women of the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university. Menz graduated with a master’s of Science in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance from the University of Oxford in England in 2016, receiving distinction for her dissertation, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Development with departmental honors from Columbia University in 2015. Her doctoral research focuses on corporate sustainability and sustainable business movements, specifically how for-profit organizations can sustain a “beyond profit purpose”—pursuing positive environmental and social impacts alongside financial success.

Congratulations to the New Canaan Girls 8U All Star Team on winning the June 27 championship of the annual Trumbull Little League tournament. The squad entered the day as the third seed after a week of pool play, and defeated Darien as well as two Trumbull teams ( to win the tournament. These girls were by far the youngest team in the tournament with about half the team being rising 3rd-graders in a tournament with predominantly rising 4th graders, and New Canaan also scored the most runs in the tournament. Here’s the player roster: Abby Weldon, Abigail Troy, Avery Muller, Caroline Driscoll, Ella Habegger, Isabella Lopreato, Lenny Ellingson, Lilah Martin, Lola Spadaccini, Lucy Toal, Melissa Bogal, Peyton Ponzeka, Rachel Weiss and Taylor Hamara. The head coach is Paul Ponzeka with assistants DJ Martin, Thomas Weldon and Greg Lopreato.

A 19-year-old Waterbury woman on July 1 turned herself in to New Canaan Police on an arrest warrant for two counts each of criminal attempt at larceny of a motor vehicle and conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle. The case has been statutorily sealed, according to Connecticut Judicial Branch records. Separately, she faces charges out of Waterbury for a 2025 arrest for first-degree burglary/bodily injury, third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace, risk of injury to a child and second-degree larceny.
