The future of one of New Canaan’s three frozen yogurt purveyors is unclear, as a sign in the window says the business was “closed for vacation” last week and it still hasn’t reopened.

Red Mango on Elm Street appears to be empty, gutted of its tables, chairs, counter and equipment. One of the franchise’s three owners (there are 200-plus Red Mango outlets nationwide), Mike Hoover of Queens, N.Y.—the other two are in Westchester—could not immediately be reached for comment. The business at 125 Elm St. is a member of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Executive Director Tucker Murphy said she doesn’t know what is happening at Red Mango, which had offered up a coupon for last week’s Taste of the Town Stroll. The business also participated in last month’s Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale.

Red Mango was one of two froyo shops in town, together with the popular Swirl on Cherry Street, until April, when Peachwave opened on Forest Street. In terms of other cold treat providers, New Canaan also has Main Street fixture Baskin-Robbins and Gelatissimo Artisan Gelato, also on Forest. Asked about how he’s faring in the crowded local market, Swirl owner Sonny Yi of Ridgefield said more competition has meant splitting up the pie to smaller slices. “You only have so many people in town,” Yi said. “More frozen dessert shops open up and it’s tough. But we do have our loyal customers and so all we have to do is focus on running our shop and doing the best we can.”
