John Laurence Read, 80, of New Canaan, passed away on Sept. 5 with his loving family by his side. John was born Oct. 21, 1935 in Evanston, Ill. to the late Oliver and Gladys Colloski Read.

He attended Greenwich High School and Northwestern University and was in the U.S. Army where he served active duty during the Korean War. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, playing golf at Silvermine Golf Club and singing in the St. Thomas More church choir for over 20 years. He had been a long time member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2287.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Coyle Read of Roscommon, Ireland; three daughters: Robin Read of Delray Beach, Fla., Erin Castillo of Birmingham, Ala. and Andrea Dunnam of New Canaan; four grandchildren: Alexis Castillo, Patrick Castillo, Troy Dunnam and Ashley Dunnam; a sister, Denise Belmont of West Palm Beach, Fla. and two brothers: Tom Read of Woodstock, Vt. and Robert Read of Shawnee, Kan.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate John’s life will be held at St. Thomas More Church in Darien, on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 am.
