John R. (Jack) Fairty , 83, of Terryville, CT passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022 after valiantly battling cancer for four years.

Jack was born February 15, 1939. The firstborn of Edwin Raymond Fairty and Virginia (McGovern) Fairty. He was raised in New Canaan where his family has deep roots that go back seven generations.

Jack graduated from New Canaan High School in 1957. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Mitchell College, he married his first wife, Beverly (Wood) and together they raised four sons in New Canaan. He went on to earn a degree in Engineering from Bridgeport Engineering and worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer for over 25 years.

Jack developed a passion for renovating old homes starting with his own Victorian house in New Canaan. He possessed an impressive talent which eventually led to his second career as a self-employed contractor.

Jack continued the family tradition of service to the New Canaan community. He volunteered on the Zoning Board of Appeals for many years, as well as serving on the Board of Directors at Lakeview Cemetery, a position held by 6 generations of the Fairty family. A quiet leader, he was always available to help anyone in need.

After 65 years in New Canaan, he married Francoise (Johnson) Morgan whom he had originally met at Center School in the 3rd grade. They shared 20 happy years together in Terryville, CT where Jack devoted his time to the things he loved most; fishing, gardening, home improvement, family and visits with his beloved grandchildren.

Jack will be lovingly remembered for his exuberant laugh, his generosity, his unconditional willingness to lend a hand, his ability to solve any problem, and above all, his love for his family and his big heart. 

He is survived by his wife, Francoise. His sons, David, John (Libbe) and Jay (Patty), his daughter-in-law, Fiona. His grandchildren, Gordon (Shelby), Caitlin and Tara (Jacob). Jennifer Dankowski (Michael), Elizabeth Morgan Brown (Bob), Suzanne McConnell (Paul), their children Jacqueline and Brooks, and Christopher Morgan (Cristy), their children Abigail and Jack. He also leaves behind his sister Lynne Brencher and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jack was predeceased by his eldest son Scott, his brother, Robert and his sister, Sally.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan at 10:30 AM followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery. 
Contributions in his memory may be made to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale.

  1. My condolences to the Fairty family. I have fond memories of assisting Mr. Fairty on a project many years ago. He was very sharp and had a wonderful sense of humor.

  2. Good, kind caring man! Lucky to have been his friend.
    Perhaps the only person to buy a house in New Canaan for $ ONE DOLLAR. BUT, it had to be moved. Jack figured it out, lived there many years. RIP
