Letter: ‘NIMBY’ Response to Oenoke Ridge Proposal Disappointing

More

As a resident of New Canaan since 1982, I have always been disappointed by the attitude of the town concerning senior residents. Unfortunately, this has continued with the “Not in My Back Yard” response to the most recent project before the Planning & Zoning Commission.

The increasing number of aging residents seems to demand that we be more generous and realistic about providing for our population right here in New Canaan. Every town around us has allowed a property to serve this need. New Canaan still remains unwilling because we have not found the perfect place in the many years of discussion.

I understand that there are objections to the density of the proposed project, but I think that a compromise design should be given consideration. A design more consistent with the surrounding buildings could have a very positive effect on the nearby parish and the other churches in the vicinity.
The seniors of our town are a very important volunteer and economic support system for our Town. We owe it to them to take a respectful and caring approach to this project. It will enhance the tagline of New Canaan.

We can then in truth say we are the Next Station to Heaven.

The question for me remains, when and will this every happen.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Gnuse

  1. Well said, Jeanne. New Canaan provides a model to be proud of with the Latham Community Center and its many activities for Seniors. But what good is it for those long time residents who leave town because of a lack of senior housing?

  2. New Canaan needs additional housing units for 400 seniors. This project is just a good first step. Our town needs leadership not only to support our seniors but also our young families in such things as finding innovative ways to get us all our needed in-town daycare. Whether it is our youngest residents or our eldest, we must stop saying ‘not here’ to the changes we need to bring our town into the future our residents require to stay and thrive here.
