Every year after Thanksgiving weekend, we are fortunate to have the New Canaan Beautification League and the New Canaan Garden Club partner to hold our town’s Holiday Greens Workshop at the Nature Center. Several dozen volunteers from both clubs create many of our town’s holiday decorations from scratch into the giant size festive wreaths displayed on our town’s municipal buildings throughout the season.

This doesn’t just happen.

Our town is beautified by a wonderful group of talented and dedicated volunteers who give their time on this very special day. These many volunteers have been making us smile year after year with their festive holiday decorations.

How about those incredible and adorable Gnomes which began a few years ago? Their popularity continues to grow, and you can’t help but smile when you see them.

A huge and noteworthy thank you to the New Canaan Beautification League and Garden Club members who work together to organize, publicize, and create this wonderful sense of community with this Holiday Greens workshop.

Our most sincere gratitude to the many members of our New Canaan community, especially, to Deb Jaeger and the staff of the New Canaan Nature Center, to Jenn and Peter Cipriano, owners of COPIA, Home and Garden, to the staff of the New Canaan Parks Department: John Howe, Todd Deklyn, and their entire team, who pick up, deliver and install each completed piece: six giant wreaths, 40 smaller ones, garlands, town hall trees, eight adorable Gnomes, lights, and always with a smile.

Special thanks to Tracy Merrill, Becky Barlow, and Carrie Corcoran who led the team of volunteers from The New Canaan Garden Club to create arrangements. And, the many New Canaan Beautification League members like Carol and Peter Seldin and Peter Atkins (Peter Atkins & Associates LLC Landscape, Bedford, N.Y.) and Mary Ann Henry, who always contribute abundant greens of all kinds.

Rob Hutchinson of Hutchinson Tree who always guarantees we will have enough for our needs, and of course the Town of New Canaan with their trimmings from around the community.

Let’s not forget an extra special thank you to Janet Schmitz, a 50 year resident, who provided the beautiful and bountiful holly from her property.

And, a huge thank you, Faith Kerchoff, also leader of the Gnomes, Kathy Lapolla, Kathy Kwiatkowski and Yvonne Hunkeler for your unique and beautiful container design and Gnome work.

We wish everyone a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy 2024.

With gratitude,

Kathleen and Peter Murphy
