On behalf of the Irwin Park Committee of the New Canaan Garden Club, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the outstanding work that Bob Horan, New Canaan Tree Warden, and Tiger Mann, Director of Public Works, have recently completed at Irwin Park. We are absolutely delighted with the transformation and deeply appreciate the care and expertise they brought to the project.
The changes are already breathtaking, particularly in the meadow area. Their efforts have helped us see the area’s full potential, creating the opportunity for future planting of native trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. The removal of Norway Maples, including both saplings and mature trees, has been an essential step in improving the landscape. Norway Maples are invasive, and their removal allows for the restoration of the park with species that will be more beneficial to its long-term health.
We are also incredibly grateful for the limbing up of the Hinoki Cypresses and the removal of the saplings surrounding them. This work has opened up the space, allowing us to finally see the statue, ‘Mirror, Mirror,’ created by Harry Caesar, a longtime New Canaan resident, from the path. With the clearing of undergrowth, we can now envision keeping the weeds at bay and underplanting the area with native shrubs and ferns, further enhancing the beauty and ecological health of this cherished part of the park.
The pruning of the apple trees at just the right time, during dormancy, along with the removal of deadwood, will ensure that the trees remain healthy and vibrant, adding to the overall beauty and sustainability of Irwin Park.
Thank you, Bob and Tiger, once again for such outstanding contributions to the preservation and beautification of Irwin Park. Their hard work has made a lasting impact, and we look forward to continuing to improve this beautiful public space for the enjoyment of the entire community.
Warm regards,
Diane Dooley, Tori Frazier and Suzy Lavieri
