This winter has given those of us on the east side of town a new level of respect for our mail carrier.

The snow has been relentless — mailboxes buried, curbs invisible, driveways half-shoveled. Yet somehow, Lucy maneuvers her truck down Weeburn Drive like a seasoned navigator, inching past snowbanks and leaning out to reach boxes most of us haven’t properly cleared.

Inside my house, my two wire-haired Griffons hear her long before I do. They bolt to the mailbox, knowing she’ll manage — even in gloves, even in the cold — to deliver the mail and, with astonishing aim, a biscuit for each of them.

But it’s not the treats that move me.

It’s her sunny disposition. In a season when it would be easy to complain about the weather, she shows up. Careful. Patient. Smiling. Undeterred.

The mail may be bills and circulars. But somehow, she makes even opening an envelope from the electric company feel like less of a blow.
