To the Editor:

The members of the New Canaan Fire Department would like to thank our friends John, Judy and Gregg at Greggs Garden Center & Landscaping at 21 Grove Street for the donation of the planting materials for the front of the firehouse for Memorial Day. We appreciate the opportunity to honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day and will never forget their sacrifices.

Respectfully,

Dear Editor,

New Canaan CARES hosted our 299h annual New Canaan CARES Home Tour on Wednesday, May 25. Thanks to the support of our local community and beyond, the day was a tremendous success! The glorious spring weather and our bucolic town provided the setting for hundreds of New Canaan residents and visitors from throughout Connecticut, Florida, Long Island, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and Canada to enjoy the Tour.

Six gracious New Canaan families opened their homes in support of CARES. Tour-goers enjoyed innovative architecture, creative design, masterful construction, beautiful and unique artwork, marble and stonework beyond compare and creative landscaping. All of this while honoring tradition and celebrating modern innovation. Especially important to CARES is the sense of community created throughout the day.

CARES is humbled by the outpouring of support for this beloved Fairfield County tradition. We would like to especially thank our Grand Sponsor, Team Saxe + Bryan of Compass Real Estate as well as our other generous corporate sponsors: Katie Kinsley Photography, New Canaan/Darien + Rowayton Magazine, The NewCanaanite, JerMar Designs, Thom Filicia Inc., Architechnology Designs, Chamberlain Landscape Services, DEANE, Inc., Fordham Marble Company, H&Y Construction, Inc., Krista Fox Interiors, Lynn Morgan Design, Mackin Architects, Matthew R. Dougherty Architect, LLC, McCafferty Construction, LLC, MJM Industries, LLC, ODD Job Landscaping, RAND Insurance, Robidoux Landscaping, Inc., Rob Sanders Architects, LLC, Simply Delicious, Stewart’s Wine & Spirits, and Wadia Associates.

We would also like to especially acknowledge our patron party hosts and the six homeowners who graciously opened their beautiful homes for the day.

A huge thank you goes to the many, many volunteers led by the Home Tour Committee, as well as the New Canaan CARES board and staff who dedicated their time and energy to making the event so successful.

The Home Tour is CARES’ biggest fundraiser of the year and allows us to work to empower youth, strengthen families and build community.  A heartfelt thank you to all who attended and came out to support CARES. Please plan on joining us on May 24, 2023, for the 30th Annual New Canaan CARES Home Tour!

Sincerely,

Judy Phillips

I’ve been selling beauty and skin care products a long time, and when I launched my own brand, here in Connecticut, I knew I was going to steer clear of animal testing. Many years later, I have lots of company, as the whole industry has moved toward non-animal methods for safety evaluation. We’ve reached the point where the Personal Care Products Council, the industry’s trade association, has joined with animal protectionists to support the federal Humane Cosmetics Act, to prohibit domestic animal tests for cosmetics and the importation of new animal-tested products from elsewhere. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee is considering inclusion of the HCA within a broader measure that reauthorizes the Food and Drug Administration’s user fee programs for prescription drugs, medical devices, and other products. This makes sense because this time around, the user-fee package also grants the FDA increased oversight over cosmetics. Senator Chris Murphy is a member of this committee, and I hope that he will encourage his colleagues to take this additional step to spare animals from further suffering and put us on a path to more reliable human-relevant methods for testing such products.

Sincerely
