Army Pilot Recalls Flying Vietnam Missions at Men’s Club

January 31 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

The New Canaan Men’s Club will hear about the real-life experiences of U.S. Army pilot, Francis Doherty, who flew covert reconnaissance missions in Vietnam, when it meets Friday at 10 a.m. in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge. Doherty is the author of “Only the Light Moves: Flying Covert Reconnaissance Missions in the Vietnam War,” a book recounting the missions he flew and the emotional struggles he and his comrades faced upon returning to the U.S. His remarks will begin at about 10:40 a.m., following the business portion of the meeting.
On his missions, Doherty searched out Vietcong troop movements and called out targets for waiting F-4 Phantom jets. Going beyond his year of Vietnam duty as a military pilot, he went onto a career as a commercial airline pilot for 32 years.
Doherty is a New Canaan resident and a 1967 graduate of the University of San Francisco.
The Men’s Club has openings for new members, New Canaan men over 55-years of age. For information about joining, email ncmens@ncmens.club
