Famed Artist T. M. Nicholas Discusses “Painting Water” Tuesday, November 19 at 6:30 pm

Tuesday, November, 19, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$5

In conjunction with their current exhibition, NORTHEAST WATERSCAPES: Artists Explore Oceans, Rivers, Harbors, The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society presents a special evening with noted artist
T. M. Nicholas: Painting Water on Tuesday, November 19 at 6:30 pm in The Lindstrom Room.

The exhibition features 60 works of art dating from 1838 to 1977 and focuses on New England and New York state. Nicholas will select works from the show to illustrate the complexities of painting water in constant motion. He will talk about how artists incorporate water to enhance their compositions and increase the range of colors. A number of Nicholas’ works will be on display to illustrate his observations and examples.

T. M. Nicholas is one of the country’s most accomplished contemporary impressionists. He has received 126 prizes, awards and gold medals. His work and feature articles on him have appeared in 26 publications. He is represented in 7 museums and private institutions, and is represented in 9 galleries throughout the United States. Since 1984, Nicholas has had 21 one-man shows in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Ohio, Georgia and California. He has served as the President of the Rockport Art Association & Museum. In January 2020 the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, MA, will present a retrospective on Nicholas and his artist father, Tom Nicolas.

Nicholas resides with his wife and family in Essex, MA, a part of the broader Cape Ann art community. He is a “plein air” and studio painter, starting outdoors and “taking as much from nature as possible,” making extensive notes on light, shadow, clouds and values and then returning to the studio. Nicholas believes a good painting is not just about nature, it must combine something of the artist. “A good painting embodies an emotional quality, the emotion I feel when first confronted with the subject,” he explains. “I try in every painting to make the viewer feel what I felt when I first saw the subject.”

The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is located at 13 Oenoke Ridge. For more information call (203) 966-1776 ext. 3. The presentation is free to members, $5 to all others.
