Festival of Mexican Films Presented at New Canaan Library as Part of One Book New Canaan Read, Spare Parts

Saturday, March, 9, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 4:30 pm

o

New Canaan Library’s town wide read of Joshua Davis’s Spare Parts presents the opportunity for dynamic programming and events that support the themes of this award winning book. Learn more about the long and rich culture of film in Mexico with a screening of three different films on Saturday, March 9 at 11 am, 1 pm and 3pm in the Adrian Lamb Room. Please register for this event, online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
The festival offers the chance to be immersed in the golden age of Mexican filmmaking, from the 1930s to the 1950s, and to gain insight into why Mexico has twice won the Cannes Film Festival, and annually hosts the prestigious Guadalajara International Film Festival. Mexico, perhaps more than any other Latin American country, boasts a long history of cinematic tradition and success, and catapulted to fame actors and actresses such as María Felíx, Dolores del Río and Pedro Infante.
Showings are as follows:

11am – Ahi Esta El Detalle (That’s the Point!) 1940, which is considered by critics to be one of Mexico’s best comedies of all time.

1 pm – Aventurera (The Adventuress) 1950, a drama/musical about a young woman trying to better her life. This film is of the “rumberas” genre, a very popular genre of the time, featuring African-Caribbean dancers.

3 pm – La Tercera Palabra (The Third Word) 1956, starring Pedro Infante, screen idol of the time, in a drama centering around two scheming aunts trying to wrest the inheritance from their uneducated and naïve nephew.
