Mark Nunan To Speak to Men’s Club about President Van Buren
Friday, December, 1, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
The New Canaan Men’s Club will hear about President Martin Van Buren, one of the less-remembered presidents in history, in a talk Friday by Mark Nunan at its weekly meeting in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church beginning at 10 a.m.
Nunan, a familiar speaker at Men’s Club meetings, has previously described the careers of New York’s infrastructure power broker Robert Moses, former New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Nunan’s remarks will begin around 10:40 a.m. after the business portion of the meeting.
Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, was a diplomat and a statesman, who also had a significant role in founding of the Democratic Party. In his other governmental roles, Van Buren served as secretary of state and as U.S. senator from New York.
Nunan, born in Cork, Ireland, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1976. He continued his education at Stanford University where he was awarded a Master’s in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1983. He was a Fellow at the prestigious L’ENS normale superieure and at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. In 1983, he joined COS Inc., a firm that assists companies and governments to research, develop and implement new business opportunities globally, retiring as senior vice president in 2018.
