Heather Gaudio Fine Art is pleased to present its upcoming group exhibition entitled Black, White & Red All Over to be held December 5th, 2014 through February 14, 2015. The show will consist of paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture by Paul Bloch, Caio Fonseca, Madeleine Keesing, Raymond Saá, and Donald Sultan. The public is invited to attend an opening reception to be held on Friday, December 5th from 5-8 pm.

About the artists:

Paul Bloch combines improvisation with the ancient art of stone carving to produce abstract sculpture made out of Carrara marble and other metamorphic rocks. Utilizing hand-powered tools and steering clear from heavy machinery or high-tech preparatory designs, Bloch chisels his sculpture much as a jazz musician creates a composition. He does not use sketches or maquettes, nor does he have a notion of what the final outcome will be until he is finished. Bloch has exhibited his work in the United States and abroad and his sculptures are in numerous corporate and private American and European collections.

Caio Fonseca explores the details and values of the visual phenomena around him, creating signature abstract paintings that represent the relationships between tonality, contrast, spatial relations and proportions. The show will feature two paintings from his most recent body of work, vertical abstractions that carry new visual associations that are less about background and foreground and instead evoke a staccato of rhythms. Fonseca has had a highly prolific career as a painter and printmaker, with an extensive exhibition roster in American and European galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution and the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. He is also in numerous private, corporate and U.S. Embassy collections around the world.

Madeleine Keesing creates paintings that combine the patterns and decoration movement with a variation of color field painting. She subtly combines layers of colors into the various stages of painting, neatly dividing them into grids or patterns to evoke the impression of textile work. Keesing’s paintings have been widely exhibited throughout the United States, and are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and in the personal collection of Thomas Krens, the former director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

Raymond Saá creates patterns inspired by the tropical foliage of the Caribbean, re-contextualizing them into new spatial environments. A son of Cuban exiles, Saá draws from the experience of displacement and the struggle for identity. Combining sewing skills acquired from his mother with an eye for weaves, lacing and fabric patterns, Saá assembles pieces of stock paper or wood together, creating clusters of floral patterns that are not so much a faithful representation of nature, rather a metaphor for cultural relocation and diaspora. Saá has a roster of solo and group exhibitions in the United States and has been the recipient of various awards and residencies, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Donald Sultan is a leading contemporary artist known for his large-scale abstracted still-life paintings that use industrial materials such as enamel, tar and vinyl tiles. This exhibition will showcase his printmaking talents, combining his penchant for enamels with flocking that contrast tactile and smooth surfaces in stunning blacks, whites and reds. Sultan has enjoyed a distinguished career as a painter, printmaker and sculptor, merging a traditional artistic expression with a unique contemporary approach. His critically acclaimed works are considered to be at the forefront of contemporary art and have been exhibited in most of the leading museums and galleries around the world.
