FreeNew Canaan Elementary School Marks 75 Years of Learning and Community!
This year, New Canaan’s South Elementary School is proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary of educating and inspiring generations of students. Since opening its doors in September 1950, the school has been a cornerstone of the community, shaping the lives of thousands of children and serving as a gathering place for families, staff, and neighbors alike.
Preparations for celebrating this milestone have gotten underway, and will start with a community holiday Sing-A-Long on Friday, December 19th, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. All of New Canaan is invited, but we would really love to have alumni, former faculty, staff, and parents of South School join our current school community for this event. The sing-a-long will take place in the Gower Road parking lot. If you are going to attend, please complete this brief form so we have an idea of how many people will be joining us South School 75th Anniversary Sing-A-Long RSVP or email us at Southschool75@ncps-k12.org and let us know how many people will be attending. Please RSVP by Friday December 12th.
Additionally, the school is reaching out to the community for help in commemorating its history. Organizers are especially interested in old photographs, memorabilia, yearbooks, or personal stories from alumni, former staff, and longtime residents. These treasures will help showcase the school’s rich history and the many memories created over the past seven and a half decades.
“This is a celebration for the whole New Canaan community,” said Matt Kascak, current principal of South School. “We want to honor our past, celebrate our present, and look ahead to the future—and we’d love for families, alumni, and neighbors to be part of that process.”
Anyone with photographs, artifacts, or suggestions for commemorative events is encouraged to contact the school office at 203-594-4300 or by email at Southschool75@ncps-k12.org. We would love to create a display of photographs and artifacts, and we will return all items at the end of the school year.
As South School turns 75, it remains dedicated to the same mission it had at its founding: to provide a strong foundation for students and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
