Stoddard Art Lecture at New Canaan Library Presents: Gaston Lachaise and his American Muse: Their life, love, and legacy (1882-1935)

Wednesday, April, 24, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

New Canaan Library is pleased to welcome Paula Hornbostel, Director and a Trustee of the Lachaise Foundation, as guest lecturer for this year’s annual Stoddard Art Lecture. Ms. Hornbostel will speak about Gaston Lachaise, one of the 20th Century’s most daring and celebrated sculptors. The Stoddard Lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room, preceded by a light reception at 6 p.m. Please register to attend, online at newcanaanlibrary.org.

‘The man through whose touch a few cubic inches become colossal.’ Born and raised in Paris, Gaston Lachaise immigrated to America on the heels of a beautiful American woman 10 years his senior. Lachaise devoted his life to Isabel, putting her on a pedestal, as the renowned sculptor and artist Louise Bourgeois noted, both literally and figuratively. Ms. Hornbostel will speak about their years in New York and Maine, their friends, their letters, and the challenges they faced. She will discuss the development of the man and of his sculpture, and shed light on the enduring love which inspired them both and survives in their powerful legacy.

Paula Hornbostel is the Director and a Trustee of the Lachaise Foundation. She has helped organize exhibitions of the work of Gaston Lachaise for museums around the world. After interning at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy, and guarding the work of Louise Bourgeois in the American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, she went on to earn her master’s degree from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Paula worked for 11 years at Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, New York, where she helped organize “Gaston Lachaise: Sculptures and Drawings,” an exhibition which traveled to England, France, Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic. In 2009 she collaborated with George Stoney and David Bagnall on the documentary film “Flesh in Ecstasy: Gaston Lachaise and the Woman He Loved”. Most recently she was the Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Art Journal, which came out again in 2018 after a 25 year hiatus.
