A motor vehicle stop on White Oak Shade Road on Wednesday morning led to the arrest of a fugitive from justice in Georgia, New Canaan’s police chief said.

At about 10:17 a.m., police stopped an Alpharetta, Ga. man for distracted driving—he was talking on his cellphone, Chief Leon Krolikowski said in a press release.

Police running the motorist’s information found him to be wanted on charges of shoplifting, probation violation and failure to appear in court, the chief said. He was charged with failure to carry a driver’s license, fugitive from justice and cited for a cellphone violation, officials say.

Georgia authorities agreed to extradite him to their state, Krolikowski said.

He was held on $500,000 bond and scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
