Last week was championship week for several New Canaan youth baseball teams as the spring season came to a close. Here’s a recap of the action from the Majors 70’s and AA title games.
Majors 70’s
The Orioles, sponsored by SONO Fieldhouse, beat Norwalk Champion George Comfort 12-4 at Fox Run Field on Wednesday, to win the 2014 Majors Division World Series. Max Plum hurled five dominant innings for the New Canaan champs before handing the ball off to Jack Lisecky, who pitched a scoreless sixth.
Lisecky helped set the early offensive tone, leading off the game with a deep double to left. The Orioles went on to plate three in the opening frame, getting RBI from Noah Jensen and Jack O’Donnell. In the second, Charlie Tait opened with a walk and Walker Swindell drove him in with a big two-out double.
The Orioles bats stayed hot in the third. Jensen ripped a double and Plum capped off a superb overall performance with a two-run HR over the left centerfield fence. O’Donnell and Tait extended the big inning with a single and RBI double. The Orioles tacked on three more in the fifth getting big hits from O’Donnell and Dylan Pescatore.
The Orioles defense was also sharp, highlighted by sterling plays from Swindell, Cameron Hill, Jack Sanders and solid catching from Dukes Plum.
The Orioles reached the World Series by beating the Red Sox, sponsored by BVSA, 6-3 in the New Canaan championship. Plum and Jenson combined for six crisp innings with Julian Tonghini pitching four strong for the Sox.
The Orioles received big hits from Jensen (two-run HR, single), Lisecky (three singles), O’Donnell (double and single), Sanders (double) and Swindell. The Red Sox offense was led by Zack Ramppen (double and single) with base hits from Davis Shattan, Manning Landeck and Zach Boland.
AA
The Stamford Insurance Group Athletics beat the Karl Chevrolet Yankees in a tightly contested 12-7 game to win the AA division championship.
Jack Reed got things going for the A’s with a walk and a stolen base, and came around to score as Cooper Dinan drove an RBI single to right. Meanwhile, A’s starter Dan Rogers sustained the lead with 2 innings of scoreless pitching. The A’s seemingly broke the game open in the third inning, as big hits from Ty Groff and Brendan Holahan upped the advantage to 9-0.
AA Champs – the Athletics.
The Yanks would fight back in the third inning as RBI hits from Trey Hartnett, Giovanni Cascione and Holden Busby got the Bombers right back in the game, trailing 9-5. The A’s would extend the lead to 12-5 with hits by Henry Sokolowski, Calvin Stuart and Phil Etergino and runs by Andrew Jones and Jared Kramer. The Yanks would creep closer again with great at bats from Cole Shubert, Cameron “The Cambino” Besaw and John Totaro, but solid defense by Ryan Connelly and Jack Johnson helped stymie the rally and clinch the championship for the A’s.
