Police are investigating the theft of an estimated $100,000 in jewelry from a New Norwalk Road home.
A 45-year-old woman returned to her home around 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 12 (last Friday) and noticed that her front door was unlocked, though it showed no signs of forced entry, according to a police report. Upstairs in her master bedroom, though, the resident saw several drawers and her jewelry cabinet tossed about, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.
An itemized list of the jewelry missing was not immediately available, though each and every piece was missing, the report said.
Ogrinc confirmed that indoors workers recently had been in the house.
The woman had left her house at about 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 12, Ogrinc said.
Police responding to the call discovered that a basement window at the home had been forced open—possibly the escape route, Ogrinc said.
It isn’t clear whether she had a home alarm system.
New Canaan Police have issued the following tips to residents to guard against home burglaries:
- Activate alarm systems—always—even when leaving your house for a short time.
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Never leave your keys in your car.
- Report all suspicious persons or vehicles to our Department at 203-594-3500.
- Secure all valuables.
