Police on Monday arrested a 59-year-old Bridgeport man in connection with the theft this summer of more than one dozen bicycles in New Canaan.
Between June 10 and July 9, the man stole 14 bicycles from town, a total value of more than $11,000, according to a police report.
He would often enter garages that had doors left open and remove the bikes from them, the report said. He also would steal bicycles left outside in driveways or yards, it said.
His arrest on charges of second- and third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal trespass and third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-degree larceny is the result of a multi-agency investigation the includes police from New Canaan, Wilton, Westport, Fairfield and Darien, officials said.
Video surveillance, cellphone data and locating stolen bicycles on Craigslist all went into identifying the man and securing the arrest warrant.
He turned himself in Dec. 20, according to New Canaan Police.
“The New Canaan Police remind residents to secure their homes, belongings and vehicles,” the police report said. “Crimes of opportunity are just that, eliminate the opportunity by protecting your property and securing your homes and vehicles.”
Police withheld the man on a total of $170,000 bond and scheduled him to appear Monday in state Superior Court.
