Police this week arrested a pair of Stamford men, 19 and 20, on forgery, drug and drunk driving charges after stopping their car in New Canaan for displaying an expired license plate.

At about 8:42 p.m. Monday, an officer traveling on New Norwalk Road spotted the expired registration plate and stopped the vehicle on Locust Avenue, according to a police report.

Approaching the car, the officer smelled burnt marijuana, and the driver (the 19-year-old) said he had been smoking pot about an hour earlier, the report said.

The driver failed field sobriety tests and a search of the car turned up a silver grinder with marijuana residue, black metal box with hash oil vaporizer (with the oil), rolling papers, joint and a fraudulent Connecticut driver’s license, it said.

The license belonged to the passenger in the car, the 20-year-old, and he was charged with second-degree forgery.

The motorist was charged with driving under the influence and cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to carry insurance ID and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police released the passenger on $200 bond and scheduled him to appear June 10 in state Superior Court in Norwalk. The driver was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear June 10.
