Seabourne Herbert (Bert) Tanner Jr., 90, of Duxbury, Massachusetts and Southport, Maine passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on March 2, 2024.

He was born October 2, 1933 in Mountain Brook, Alabama, son of Seabourne Herbert and Martha Tanner. He met his British wife Kathy at a party in the Hamptons in 1966 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage living first in Manhattan, then spent 43 years in New Canaan, CT. where they raised their children. They recently moved to Peterson Road in Duxbury, MA.
Bert is survived by his loving wife Kathy and their children Richard and Susan. Richard Tanner, his wife Gillian de Haan and their children Rowan (16) and Reilly (14) reside in Rowayton, CT. Susan Uitti, her husband David and their children Luke (15), Jane (12) and Libby (6) live in Duxbury, MA. Bert is predeceased by his sister Edith Broughton of Birmingham, AL and survived by younger sister Martha Jane (Janie) Henderson of Mountain Brook, AL.
After attending The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, he moved to New York City in 1955 to study at The Art Student’s League. Bert’s career centered on illustration, animation and working with major New York advertising agencies doing animatics and television test commercials. His earlier career focused on science fiction illustration, comic books, aviation and textbook illustration. He was commissioned to illustrate the then future NASA lunar landing module and was an animator for the startup children’s show ‘Sesame Street.’ He was a long-standing member of the Society of Illustrators.
Bert’s wide range of interests included Crimson Tide Football, photography, music, video, film, kites, birds, meteorology, astronomy, hiking, beach volleyball, skiing, snorkeling, current events, and an extraordinary fascination with flight, specifically World War II aviation. To say he loved art is an understatement, he adored all art. He will be remembered for his wonderful creativity, curious mind and great sense of humor. Bert was drawn to the written word and was known by many for his witty poems and limericks. ‘Pop’ loved his family and will always be missed for his creative cartoon cards to mark every family occasion.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Cranberry Hospice in Plymouth, MA. A family funeral was held in Duxbury on March 11th. A Celebration of Life will be held in New Canaan, CT in June.
