‘Stolen Vehicle’ License Plate Reader Hit Leads to MV Charges for Man, 28

Police last week arrested a 28-year-old Bridgeport man and charged him with multiple motor vehicle-related offenses after receiving a “stolen vehicle notification hit” from a license plate reader.

Authorities made the discovery in the area of South Avenue and Gerdes Road at about 8:16 p.m. on June 27. The Bridgeport man was the driver and sole occupant of the car, according to a police report.

Further investigation showed that the plate did belong to the stopped car, yet it was missing a front license plate that was itself reported to be on another stolen vehicle, police said.

Officers also found that the car’s registration was suspended, that it wasn’t sufficiently insured and that the driver’s adult learner permit had expired.

He was charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including illegal operation of a motor vehicle with minimum insurance, operating a motor vehicle with a license and failure to display plates.

Police released the man after he promised to appear July 9 in state Superior Court.
