The New Canaan Rams boys hockey team made an impressive run in the FCIAC playoffs, falling to eventual champion Darien in the semifinals. That game might not have ever happened if not for the heroics in double overtime of senior forward Parker Lewis in New Canaan’s quarterfinal match against Fairfield last Saturday. Lewis knocked home a rebound at the 3:56 mark of the second extra session for a dramatic game-winning goal, capping off a remarkable 3-2 comeback win, after the Rams fell behind early 2-0. The No.

Congratulations to Frank Cognetta and Isabel Taben, the NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week. At the start of the season, Frank Cognetta didn’t know exactly when he’d be back on the football field, as a broken foot was expected to have the senior co-captain sidelined until at least mid-October. The healing process went better than expected and Cognetta made his much-anticipated debut Homecoming weekend in limited action against Greenwich. One week later Cognetta scored three touchdowns in a 35-14 win at Warde, and this past week he capped off his comeback with a 30 carry, 200-yard performance against St.

NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week: Courtney Overacker and Chase Williams

The NewCanaanite.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Congratulations to Courtney Overacker and Chase Williams for being named NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week. The New Canaan girls varsity soccer team’s 8-5-3 record in 2014 was good enough to qualify for the Class L state playoffs, thanks in large part to the play of co-captain Courtney Overacker. The senior forward has had a solid performance on the pitch this year, notching 6 goals and 5 assists on the season. Overacker’s penchant for coming up big was especially noticeable down the stretch, scoring a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Danbury last Thursday and following it up with another goal and assist in a 7-0 win over Bridgeport Central on Saturday.

NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week: Gracie Castle and Michael Kraus

The NewCanaanite.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Congratulations to Grace Castle and Michael Kraus for being named NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week. After finishing last season at 6-12, the New Canaan Rams Girls Volleyball team clinched a bid in the state playoffs earlier this week and currently sit in seventh place in the FCIAC at 9-6. A major reason for the turnaround has been the play of senior setter Gracie Castle. Castle led the Rams to a 3-0 win against Trinity Catholic on Tuesday, tallying 12 assists, seven kills and five aces.

NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week: Alex Ellsworth and Kylie Towbin

The NewCanaanite.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Congratulations to Alex Ellsworth and Kylie Towbin for being named NewCanaanite.com Athletes of the Week. Ellsworth has been New Canaan’s top finisher in all but 4 of the Rams’ 18 dual cross country meets this season. The senior co-captain also led the Rams at the Wilton and Brewster Invites where the team placed first and second, respectively. Called “an exemplary leader and a good role model for our younger athletes” by head coach Bill Martin, Ellsworth’s success has helped the Rams to a 14-4 record, good for second place in the FCIAC East Division.
