Letter: New Canaan ‘Lucky’ To Have Rich Townsend Running for Town Council

I have no direct ties to Rich, but after witnessing his first debate this summer I was moved by his down to earth practical approach: make every decision based on the impact it will have on property values (as a whole). I walked away feeling New Canaan is lucky to have him running for office. Stanford MBA, Former CFO of Loral Space & Communications, long history living and raising his family in New Canaan and time … to work for the benefit of New Canaan. This town is in need of more smart, independent and transparent elected officials working as a team to accomplish goals. This town needs leadership that will come with this election.

First Selectman Candidates Talk Trump, School Start Times, Cell Service, Parking and State Budget Woes at Debate

The Republican candidate for New Canaan’s highest-elected office said Monday night that, despite his ties to President Trump, what’s happening in the state capital is far more important to local voters than Washington, D.C.

According to Town Councilman Kevin Moynihan, “the Democrats in Hartford are more much relevant to our situation that we have now in New Canaan.”

“I don’t really think, as most people say, that Democratic-Republican politics matter much on the local level,” Moynihan said during the debate with his opponent, Democratic candidate Kit Devereaux, held at Town Hall. “Cell service and commuter parking are not Republican or Democrat issues.”

According to a biography on his website, Moynihan served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention last year, as well as on the National Finance Committee for TrumpVictory and the Transition Finance Committee of President-elect Donald J. Trump. Devereaux said that she was concerned about the association because “our nation’s capital is in pretty much disarray, and so is our state.”

“And I would hate to see divisiveness come to New Canaan, and I would hope that it would not,” she said. Moynihan responded, “I think the only people bringing divisiveness to this campaign are the Democrats,” drawing some scoffs and hisses from the standing-room-only crowd. About 150 people attended the League of Women Voters’ Candidates Forum, which also was broadcast live on Channel 79.

Letter: Penny Young for Town Council

Dear Sir,

Our family has known Penny Young and her family for four decades. During that time we have admired her for many things. She is a loving wife and mother, a steadfast friend, she is bright and energetic, has high character, strong values and a love for our community. In a volunteer capacity she has made many contributions to the wonderful quality of life we in New Canaan enjoy, the most notable of which is the beautiful, valuable and heavily used Lapham Community Center, which she first conceived and then brought to fruition. Since she has been a member of the Town Council she has consistently been one of its hardest workers, its most diligent observers, clearest and most visionary thinkers, and, very importantly, able to find a balance between what the citizens would like and what they are willing to pay for.

Letter: Andrew Brooks for Treasurer

As a practicing Certified Public Accountant over the past 40 years with the Big Four Accounting firms, a major international financial conglomerate and founder of my Certified Public Accounting firm in 1987, which firm is a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and quality reviewed by the AICPA National Peer Review Division I can accurately and with industry knowledge attest to the outstanding performance of New Canaan’s current Treasurer Andrew Brooks. I have also functioned as treasurer of many not for profit organizations and currently serve as the Treasurer for the Greenwich Council of the Boy Scouts of America. That said, I can conclude that you do not need to be a Certified Public Accountant to function as treasurer for our municipality. The prerequisites necessary for performance in the treasury function are actual treasury experience in cash management and asset management and training in the treasury function. Andrew Brooks has received this necessary training at the international accounting firm of Deloitte Touche LLP and at his current position at Accenture.
