Varnum’s Pharmacy Moving Down the Hill in Mid-March

The widely anticipated move of Main Street fixture Varnum’s Pharmacy down the hill to where East Avenue meets Cherry Street likely is one month away, a clerk at the store tells us. Dorrie Plotnick says Varnum’s will open in a newly renovated space with all new fixtures and additional products. The move will happen over a weekend and customers will experience no down-time, she said. “We wanted to remodel the store inside and it was a lot easier to sort of make a transition, rather than close the pharmacy down,” Plotnick said.

New Canaan Roads Turn Nasty on Weekend

NEW CANAAN – Many residents have skipped town for undoubtedly warmer environs. Even so, for New Canaanites who remained behind for this winter break, the tune of “Winter Weather Advisory” is a familiar one from the National Weather Service. The area is supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow accumulation with wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour on Saturday. With temperatures dipping below freezing at sunset, it could make for some hazardous Saturday night travel on the roads with black ice becoming an issue. As of now the main roads – including Oenoke Ridge and Route 123 – are in decent shape, as are the downtown streets.

Weed & Duryea: ‘What We Have Left, We Have Left’

By Michael Dinan

The pet-friendly rock salt is flying off of the shelves at Weed & Duryea, a manager of the downtown New Canaan mainstay said Saturday afternoon. On Thursday, Weed & Duryea brought in seven additional pallets of salt—various mixtures as well as pure rock salt—and then seven more on Friday, Barry Coleman told NewCanaanite.com. “But now we’re winding down,” Coleman said as customers hustled into and out of the store before the snow arrived on Saturday afternoon. “What we have left, we have left.”

The store closes at 5 p.m. Saturday and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service is calling for up to four inches of snow in New Canaan by night’s end.

In the Storm’s Wake, Waters Rise in New Canaan

Take a look at how much water already is collecting in the dip on Ponus Ridge just above Greenley. The Public Works Department has a truck pushing the slush and snow aside as fast-traveling motorists come to a halt along this stretch up near the reservoir. New Canaanites launching into February break will have plenty of wet stuff to negotiate Friday as temperatures exceed 40 degrees and Thursday’s two waves of snowfall melt down along with much of the snow from earlier in the week. Downtown, saw horses are set up along some storm drains as mini-rivers travel down either side of Elm Street. As most New Canaanites have heard by now, up to three inches of snow is expected to fall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
