Weekend Wins for New Canaan 6th Grade Girls, 5th Grade Boys Basketball

New Canaan 44, Trumbull 23

The New Canaan 6th grade girls basketball team beat Trumbull 44-23 on Sunday in a non-league game at Saxe Middle School. Every girl on the team contributed with at least two points. Leading scorers were Elizabeth St. George (11 points), Marlee Smith (10) and Olivia West (8). New Canaan fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter due to relentless Trumbull defensive pressure and it appeared that the team was going to have a long day, but they quickly took control of the tempo for the rest of the game.

New Canaan 6th Grade Girls Down New Fairfield, 21-14

New Canaan 21, New Fairfield 14

The New Canaan 6th grade girls played a close game against New Fairfield on Saturday. Quinn McKiernan opened the game with a 3 point shot. A steal from McKiernan and push up the court allowed Chloe Reidy to score with an outside jumper for the team. Tough defense from Brynne Harris and rebounding from Tyler Towers kept New Canaan ahead by 2 at the end of the first period. New Fairfield came back and went on a scoring tear at the start of the second quarter.

New Canaan 25, Weston 15

New Canaan 6th grade girls basketball team beat Weston 25-15 in an away match on Saturday. The first three baskets were all 3-pointers—two from Julia Bazata and one from Quinn McKiernan, an effort bolstered by tight defense by Emma Gibbens, Brynne Harris and Tyler Towers. McKiernan followed with two more baskets to end the first half, one from a drive to the basket and a second from a give and go by Olivia West. At the half, New Canaan led 13-2.

New Canaan 29, Darien 9

New Canaan 6G basketball team continued their winning streak with a 29-9 win at Darien Saturday afternoon. Darien won the tip-off and quickly converted it into a basket, but that was their last lead of the day. Cameron Murphy started the scoring with an inside jump shot after a defensive steal by Emma Gibbens, and Chloe Reidy continued the scoring by winning an offensive rebound off a Tyler Towers jumper. Baskets by Julia Bazata, Quinn McKiernan and Gibbens brought New Canaan to a 13-6 lead at the end of the first.

New Canaan 33, Norwalk 32

New Canaan 6th grade Girls Basketball team bested Norwalk 33-32 in overtime Saturday. The team started off strong as Quinn McKiernan won the tipoff and dished the ball to Emma Gibbens underneath to take a 2-0 lead. After Norwalk made a flurried attempt to score, McKiernan got a defensive rebound and did a long pass to a breaking Cameron Murphy, who brought the team to a 4-0 lead. However, Norwalk went on a 10 point run, punctuated only by a Brynne Harris free-throw and a McKiernan jumper.
