New Canaan’s U9 Boys Black Victorious Over Fairfield 6-0

The rain did not stop New Canaan’s Boys U9 Black on Sunday from landing a resounding victory over FUSA Team 2 in Fairfield. In the first half, New Canaan pulled ahead definitively with a 3-0 lead. Both Jackson Mountford and Hugo Sutton displayed some serious soccer skills with Mountford scoring the first goal and Sutton scoring the next two goals of the half (one assisted by Mountford). In goal, George Matviak prevented Fairfield’s offensive line from getting anything past. New Canaan scored three more goals in the first five minutes of the second half, putting the boys ahead 6-0.

New Canaan U9 Girls ‘Big Red Wrecking Ball’ Swings Again (this write-up from Jon Gizzie)

Every once in a while, a sporting match comes along that transcends the mere semblance of a strong competition and elevates itself into a hallowed place in the collectively memories of players, parents and coaches. Such was the exhibition put on by New Canaan’s U9G ‘Big Red Wrecking Ball’ this past Sunday. It is not enough to describe the back-and-forth of play after play in exhaustive prose for to do so would diminish the spectacle of witnessing an entire team come together, all working in unison, all driving themselves toward collective achievement and the chance to snatch victory back from possible defeat. It is not enough to describe the focused strength of Payton DeCamillo, the explosive offense of Nikki “Ferrari” Ferraro, the unshakeable poise of Lila Gizzie, the fortress defense of Parker Hanson, the indomitable focus of Madison Hartnett, the lightning speed of Julia McPhillips, the sinuous footwork of Sydney Patten, the confident control of Cecilia Patterson, the energetic attack of Kallie Patterson, the unstoppable tenacity of Paige Place, the precise passing of Reese Quinn or the surgical striking of Madeline Tully when, taken together, the synergistic dynamism of this team becomes a wonder to watch and a terror for any team to face. Newtown learned firsthand what it meant to come to the ‘House of Wrecking’ and throw down the gauntlet of challenge.

The Cedar Knolls, N.J.-based company that brings in coaches from the United Kingdom to instruct youth soccer players in New Canaan hit a snag in immigration this year that’s limited its ability to bring back most of its coaches from last fall. The matter is being addressed head-on with parents by the New Canaan Football Club. The contracted company, UK Elite, has accelerated its search to bring in replacement coaches for the NCFC’s Travel and Academy teams this spring. ***

New Canaan’s ‘Big Red Wrecking Ball’ Demolishes Trumbull 4-1

There were no remaining signs of Old Man Winter when the New Canaan FC U9 Girls Red team stepped onto the pitch to kick off their season opener this past Sunday. The sidelines were quickly abuzz with barely contained excitement as parents and siblings alike began whispering of the strong season to come and the seemingly unstoppable force that has become known as the “Big Red Wrecking Ball.”

NC Red exploded with pent-up energy from the long off-season and quickly got on board 1-0 with a deft tap-in from Paige Place on a well-timed cross from Nikki “Ferrari” Ferraro who had just finished a long serpentine run through several defenders up the right side of the pitch. Stunned out of their winter slumber, Trumbull attempted to turn up the heat but the NC Red defense kept them well contained and thwarted any attempts on goal. Following the next round of substitutions, forward Payton DeCamillo managed to steal a weak pass from the Trumbull defense and blast it past a surprised Trumbull keeper to bring the score to 2-0. Late in the half, NC Red added another insurance goal when Kallie Patterson planted a surgical shot in the far left corner of the net following a solo dash from the middle of the pitch that left several confused defenders in her wake.

New Canaan FC Girls U11 Red Team Has Championship Weekend

The New Canaan FC Girls U11 Red Team played two games this past weekend to claim their division’s champion title. On Saturday, the Red team traveled to Newtown to take on the number one seeded Wilton Blue Team in a game that turned out to be one of the most tension filled games of the season. New Canaan scored first when Saige Hartslief stole the ball from Wilton and passed it to Addie Cannon who worked a beautiful crossing pass to Ava Gizzie. Gizzie blasted a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The defensive play of Kate Caione and Nola Kammerer, with the goal tending of Ella Patterson, managed to keep Wilton at bay but Wilton would score twice to bring the score to 2-1 as the half ended.
