The Cedar Knolls, N.J.-based company that brings in coaches from the United Kingdom to instruct youth soccer players in New Canaan hit a snag in immigration this year that’s limited its ability to bring back most of its coaches from last fall. The matter is being addressed head-on with parents by the New Canaan Football Club. The contracted company, UK Elite, has accelerated its search to bring in replacement coaches for the NCFC’s Travel and Academy teams this spring.

Police received a report at about 10:22 a.m. Sunday about a distressed dog in a car at the Acme (Food Emporium) lot on Elm Street. The owner turned up and left the with dog, according to Officer Allyson Halm of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section.

The 11th Annual STAR Walk, 5K Run and Roll will be held Sunday morning at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. We’re hearing those in attendance will include James Randon, the New Canaan runner who broke the 4-minute mile record at Yale.

We’re hearing that the scholarship fund set up in memory of the late Kelly Devine, beloved New Canaan teacher as well as longtime Norwalk swim coach, already has raised some $20,000.

We’re hearing a 4-pound rainbow trout was pulled out of Mill Pond during Saturday’s annual Fishing Derby. The fish was not one of those that went into stock the prior day for the popular community event—it likely had been stocked there a few years ago. It was about 18 or 19 inches long, we’re hearing.

Police last week heard from two New Canaan businesses approached by a scammer identifying himself as a representative from the power company. The fraudster said the businesses’ electric bills had gone past due and service would be shut down lest payment immediately was made, Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said. The scam has been reported elsewhere in the county.

Arianne Kolb, New Canaan resident and author of “Waveny: New Canaan’s Treasure“—the new children’s book that drew a sold-out crowd to Waveny House for its launch, including the actor Christopher Lloyd, who grew up there—will be signing copies of the book from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Elm Street Books.

Congratulations to the 14 New Canaan teams that participated in this month’s Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind state tournament in Bristol. Four teams that entered the problem-solving competition won first or second place (two NCHS and one Saxe team also took third) and will advance to the finals in Iowa next month:

One of the 78 pieces in the 27th Spectrum show, currently on exhibit at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, is of special note as it represents the introduction of new media and digital art this year, the show’s organizers say. David Emberling’s “Illumination #2: Light-Dance” is an extraordinary example of video art in which “the image is constantly changing, but never moving,” they say. Spectrum 2016 runs through May 26.

Finally, we’re hearing plenty of residents attended a no-nonsense talk about nutrition at Halo Studios last week. Led by clinical nutritionist Loryn Galardi of Wilton, the talk focused on “anti-inflammatory eating,” and she stressed eating “clean,” or eating foods as close to their natural form from nature as possible, eating more vegetables, especially leafy greens, and aiming for variety and balance in your diet.
