New Canaan Police To Start Fundraising for Second K-9 Dog

Town officials on Monday night voted unanimously to allow the New Canaan Police Department to start fundraising for a second K-9 dog. Some $75,000 must be raised to acquire the new dog, possibly a Labrador retriever, that focus on narcotics detection as well as the tracking of missing people, Chief Leon Krolikowski and Officer Shane Gibson told members of the Police Commission at their regular meeting. The current K-9 dog, Apollo the German shepherd, performs those tasks as well as patrol and apprehension, they said. A second dog would be used for more community relations—such as demonstrations at schools, churches and events—and would work on a different shift from Apollo and his handler, K-9 Officer David Rivera, they said. Gibson said he understood that Apollo is the department’s priority and “I am more than willing to try to raise the funds and put myself out there to get the money for this second dog.”

“And primarily what the second dog would be narcotics and tracking,” he said during the meeting, held at NCPD headquarters.

Newest New Canaan Police Officer Sworn In; Tam Receives ‘Officer of the Year Award’; 8 Officers, 3 Civilians Honored

The New Canaan Police Department on Tuesday recognized eight officers and three civilians for outstanding service to the community during a ceremony that also saw the agency’s newest member sworn in by the town clerk. In addressing Nicole Vartuli, a Stamford native and Westhill High School graduate who is poised for training at the Connecticut Police Academy this year with an expectation that she will undergo field training with NCPD through the early part of 2018, Chief Leon Krolikowski said that “badge you were just issued represents public trust.”

“The public willingly puts this work in your hands and trusts that you will take care of them in the proper manner,” Krolikowski said moments after Vartuli had been sworn in by Town Clerk Claudia Weber. “They do not want this responsibility for themselves. My charge to you today is to do just that: Get it right. We have all heard about the stories of officers who have gotten it wrong.

PHOTO: New Canaan Police Untangle Distressed Deer Caught in Soccer Net

New Canaan Police are getting high praise Wednesday after risking injury to free a deer who had become entangled in a front yard soccer net. At about 7:30 a.m., Officers Andrea Alexander, Shane Gibson and Sebastian Obando untangled the buck on Fable Farm Road. Officer Allyson Halm of the NCPD Animal Control section said the trio worked hard to hold down the distressed deer and free the animal, which could have kicked or otherwise hurt them. “They deserve a lot of praise for what they did—these animals are not easy to manage,” Halm said. It’s mating or “rutting” season now for deer, Halm said, that will continue through January.
