School Board’s Decision Timely with Snow Expected

It’s early yet, but March is proving the old adage true here in New Canaan: “In like a lion and out like a lamb.”

The National Weather Service is calling for snow after 4 p.m. today and overnight, up to six inches by the time is stops around 1 p.m. Monday. For parents, the Board of Education’s decision at its Feb. 24 meeting to allow New Canaan Public Schools to reduce its total planned classroom days, if needed, from 182 to 180 (the state minimum requirement) is a blessing. The move was designed to provide more cushion to the district, which only has two days left in June before snow days would cut into April break. For residents seeking salt to handle the storm’s icy aftermath, Weed & Duryea has been a steady provider already 2014.

New Canaan Schools To Make Decision on Friday in Morning

New Canaan Public Schools officials say that although it looks like classes could be cancelled for Friday, a final decision won’t be made until the morning. As it is, Friday is already scheduled as a half-day. Combining that with a delayed opening wouldn’t make sense, so classes would just be cancelled if conditions are poor, according to a bulletin posted to the district’s website, from Superintendent of Schools Mary Kolek. Because predictions for weather and conditions overnight are varying, I will be making the call about school in the morning,” Kolek says in the bulletin. “The posted schedule calls for an early dismissal for students.

New Canaan Braces for More Snow Overnight

Just as its roads and residents thaw from the storm that closed the schools and library Monday—and sent at least one SUV through a guardrail—New Canaan is expected to get another three to five inches of snow, starting after midnight and turning into freezing rain after 12 p.m. Wednesday. If school is canceled, that would be the fifth snow day of the year, leaving just four more until the days start eating into April break. For now: February break arrives week after next and April break still is scheduled for the week of April 14. The last day of school would a half day on Friday, June 13. Something for New Canaanites to keep in mind: the so-called “Ice Missile Law” that took effect Dec.

New Canaan to See 3-5 Inches of Snow Monday

Update 12:15 a.m. Monday

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for New Canaan and the rest of lower Fairfield County, with up to five inches of snow expected. “A mix of light rain and snow will change quickly to all snow just before daybreak,” the weather service says. “The snow will be moderate to heavy at times, in particular during the morning and early afternoon hours.” Though it could make New Canaan’s schoolchildren rejoice, the news likely is less than welcome for many of the district’s faculty and staff, and parents, as the public schools already have seen three snow days this academic year. Rain and snow may be perfect weather for hardcore football fans—or any Tom Cruise fans who want to relive what prompted Stefen Djordjevic to mouth off after the Walnut Heights debacle—but New Canaan parents likely have seen enough of the white stuff for awhile.
