Town Officials ‘Looking Forward To Successful Season’ at Increasingly Popular Waveny Pool [CORRECTION]

Summer in New Canaan just wouldn’t feel right without Waveny Pool open and filled to the brim with local and non-resident families alike. In preparation for this year’s season, which once again is seeing an uptick in interest among new users, Waveny Pool concentrated on maintenance of the facility, according to Recreation Director Steve Benko. Both pool heaters are active and working, Benko said, the locker rooms have been entirely re-painted and wood re-stained. The town-owned and -operated facility’s strongest client base tends to be families, but they generally don’t think about buying passes until summer weather comes along, according to Benko. “We’ve finally seemed to turn a corner from crummy spring weather,” he said.

Parks officials said Wednesday that the town received about 230 applications for nonresident family permits to Waveny Pool. The town sold 120 of the permits—the Parks & Recreation Commission recommended they sell for $1,200 apiece—following a May 1 lottery.

Town Hires Greenwich Company for $16,000 in Irrigation Work at Waveny Pool

Town officials on Tuesday approved a $15,895 contract with a Greenwich-based company to repair and replace parts of the irrigation system around the Waveny Pool. The Board of Selectmen voted 3-0 in favor of the contract with Summer Rain. According to Recreation Director Steve Benko, an irrigation system was installed when the pool was built 17 years ago “that included a sprinkler system for lawn and whole series of drip irrigation for plants or whatever.”

“And we have a whole lot of leaks,” Benko told the selectmen at their regular meeting, held at Town Hall. The area of the pool by the diving boards is “soaking wet,” Benko said. Summer Rain, which has done irrigation and maintenance work on New Canaan’s playing fields in the past, will remove some of the cracked drip irrigation equipment that isn’t truly needed and upgrade the drip irrigation system in front of the Waveny Pool building for landscaping, Benko said.

Town Approves $14,725 Contract for Waveny Pool Work; No Competitive Bids Sought

Town officials on Tuesday approved a contract with a Stamford-based painting company to spruce up Waveny Pool ahead of the 2018 season. The $14,725 contract with Alladin Services includes $1,900 in contingency and will including cleaning the main pavilion at the pool, locker rooms and cleaning around the pool, Department of Public Works Buildings Superintendent Bill Oestmann told members of the Board of Selectmen during their regular meeting. Alladin has “done a fair amount of work for the town” and has been “responsive” and “good with their pricing,” Oestmann said at the meeting, held in Town Hall. “We are seeking your approval to get this done and get ready for the opening day,” Oestmann said. Waveny Pool typically is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Parks Officials Propose 2018 Waveny Pool Rates

Saying that Waveny Pool’s reserve fund is in good shape, parks officials are recommending only modest increases to certain fees to use the popular facility, while significantly reducing the costs for an individual pass. The Parks & Recreation Commission voted 6-0 at its Jan. 10 meeting to hold the resident family pass rate at $455 for the season—it typically is open Memorial Day to Labor Day—while reducing the cost of an individual pass from $265 to $175. Recreation Director Steve Benko said that last year’s price drew some criticisms from residents saying it was too high, that they “don’t go that often” or only go on weekends, “so giving that we are on sound financial footing the committee felt that they would reduce the pass to $175 for the season.”

Commissioners voting in favor of the new slate were Sally Campbell, Hank Green, Francesca Segalas, Katie Owsley, Gene Goodman and Matt Konspore. Commissioners Doug Richardson, Jason Milligan, Andy Gordon and Laura Costigan were absent.
