Aquarion officials said a second portion of the water main requires replacement, so service on the system will be restored around midnight. It isn’t clear just how that will affect the town’s ability to make the road traversable again. New Canaanite will have updates as soon as they’re available.

Update 2:15 p.m. Monday

About 10 Aquarion customers along Main Street were affected by the water main break downtown on Monday morning, officials with the water company said.

They experienced some discoloration in tap water due to the six-inch main breaking, the result of a disturbance of minerals that normally are settled in the main, according to Peter Fazekas, director of public relations at Aquarion.

The water company expected the main itself to be repaired by 5:30 p.m. Monday, and a worker at the scene said the road should be repaired a few hours later.

A water main break on Monday morning closed Main Street between Elm and Cherry Streets.

Police and firefighters shortly after 9 a.m. set up a perimeter that also blocked motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic at Burtis Avenue and Morse Court, as water ran into storm drains all along the roadway in front of Salon Kiklo. Two sections of asphalt on Main appear to have been heaved by the water main break.

Department of Public Works officials also were on scene.

No one appeared to have been injured in the incident.

It isn’t clear how long officials expect the roadway to be closed.

New Canaanite will have more information as soon as it is available.
