Police brought a felony larceny charge against a 50-year-old Newtown man in connection with the theft last month of a 2.15-karat diamond from a ring valued at $40,000.

Some time between 8 and 8:40 a.m. on May 4, the ring went missing from the bathroom in a Weed Street home. The arrested man, a carpet installer working inside the house at the time, was arrested by warrant after police interviewed him, Ogrinc said.

The 40-year-old woman who notified police of the theft had thought it odd that the carpet installer made two trips to his van during the brief professional visit, Ogrinc said. The diamond had been removed from its ring, forced open with what appeared to be prongs, according to a police report.

The arrested man had turned himself in at 2 p.m. on June 10, was released on $75,000 bond and scheduled to appear June 19 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
