New Canaan Week in Review: Post Office Parking, Our ‘Classic’ Style

More

While the town braces for yet another snowstorm, we’re taking a look back at the week that was in New Canaan.

Town Talker

Readers are contacting us to say that there’s wide concern over the Post Office’s new location at 90 Main St. and what is perceived as a lack of effort to find a better space.

Parking officials in town, following a decision to introduce three 15-minute parking spaces in front of the building (which at times also is a loading zone), say they’re seeing frequent double-parking.

NewCanaanite.com will follow up with the post office next week for an update on the status of their search for a permanent location in town.

Quality of Life

After receiving a complaint about speeding motorists endangering pedestrians at Mead Park, town officials are considering whether it’s prudent and viable to install a sidewalk that would come off of Park Street and down into the park toward the pond.

The Town Council green-lighted the extension of a comfortable Flexi-Pave path across the Great Lawn at Irwin Park, effectively “closing the loop” there so that park-goers can walk the circumference of the Weed Street property on the path. (We also reported on some great news from the New Canaan Garden Club: Residents this spring will enjoy the sight of 5,000 daffodils planted on the crest of the hill up toward the main house there.)

The overnight snowstorm notwithstanding, we’re hearing from New Canaan’s only full service bicycle shop that cycling enthusiasm is ticking up with just a taste of spring. We also chatted with New Canaan resident and family man Brian Rogers, an insurance professional for more than 20 years who helps us navigate the March 31 deadline for the Affordable Care Act.

The New Canaan Kiwanis Club’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner is just around the corner—scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 in the St. Aloysius School’s dining hall—and tickets are on sale now.

Police News

Police reported that five coyotes were spotted in New Canaan in the past week or so—see our interactive map plotting those sightings here. Also, a former, part-time youth program director for the Outback Teen Center turned himself in on a warrant that police obtained following accusations that he’d made inappropriate comments to kids at Saxe Middle School during a work-related visit there. It isn’t clear what he said and teen center officials could not be reached for comment.

Sports

Our NCHS girls varsity ice hockey team fell to Ridgefield in the FCIACs, but is still on track to make a run in states.

New Canine-ites: Meet Jagger, a ‘rock star’ husky you likely have seen downtown, who has a nose for the dog treat giveaways on Elm Street. 5 Things I’m Obsessed With: NCHS Senior Juan Rivera is obsessed with politics, among other things (like Netflix’s “House of Cards”), which helps explain why the 18-year-old is off to study poli-sci at George Washington University—good luck!

Sooooo Random: We picked up on a few bits that didn’t shoehorn easily into our regular news categories, and put them here. It was interesting to hear about how the chronic parking offenders downtown often are those who work there.
