Maddie’s, a Pine Street eatery that mainly offered burgers and fried chicken sandwiches, closed this past weekend after about 18 months.

A sign on the door at 78 Pine St. reads “Permanently Closed” and includes this message: “With sadness and immense gratitude, we will be closing permanently with our last day being 12/07. It has been an absolute pleasure to have served New Canaan and we thank all of our customers for their support.”

Signed “The Maddie’s Team,” the note is similar to one posted on the eatery’s website.

It wasn’t immediately clear why Maddie’s closed.

Its gifted chef and owner, Eugene Chun—who had created the popular CT Sandwich Co. in the same space—could not immediately be reached for comment.

Open late and set in an area of town that includes hugely popular go-to’s such as Zumbach’s, Tony’s and Pine Street Concessions, Maddie’s opened in mid-2023, selling burgers in a crowded local market featuring favorites from Cherry Street East, Elm, Press Burger and Uncorked.

New CanaaniteWho Knew?” columnist Laura Ault had this to say about one Maddie’s offering in an August 2023 installment: “I definitely liked the Korean chicken sandwich with slaw, pickles, and K-sauce (a funky, jammy chili sauce, from what I could tell);  it checked the salty, umami, and tangy boxes that a sandwich must sometimes check. The sweet potato fries with comeback sauce were flawless, which is worth noting, as fries don’t always make the trip home so well.”

In addition to burgers and fried chicken sandwiches, Maddie’s served grilled cheese, a chicken and waffle cone, salads and wraps.

  1. CT Sandwich remains my favorite sandwich place EVER. I wish it had never been replaced but I guess the chef got bored. I still long for it. I hope something takes that space that is (at least modestly) healthy and good.

  2. Another vote for CT Sandwich. Good soups, specialty sandwiches, and wraps. Pull up a stool and watch the world go by. I also miss grumpy Pete who called me “sir” (trust me that takes some imagination).
