Despite a quiet launch, locals are already crowding into New Canaan’s newest eatery—the burger and fried chicken joint Maddie’s on Pine Street.
Offering a build-your-own-burger model similar to Press Burger on South Avenue, as well as four types of chicken sandwiches, grilled cheese, salads, wraps and ice cream, Maddie’s opened in May in the former CT Sandwich Co. space at 78 Pine St. (opposite Zumbach’s).
“All of our burgers are made to order with our custom 100% Certified Angus Beef Blend consisting of brisket, rib, and chuck to ensure a true classic taste,” according to the restaurant’s website. “The beef is then double ground to create the perfect consistency for our Smash burger. We call on the famous Martin’s Potato Roll to be our vessel. Every smash ball is created by hand and bread is delivered daily to ensure the highest quality product.”
It’s unclear why the new place is called ‘Maddie’s’ or what niche it’s designed to fill in New Canaan’s bustling food scene—talented chef-owner Eugene Chun could not be reached for comment. (Chun was also the chef-owner behind the popular CT Sandwich Co., which closed in January after a 10-year run.)
In New Canaan, Maddie’s enters a crowded burger market, with local favorites including those served up at Cherry Street East, elm, South End and SE Uncorked.
In addition to the build-your-own option, Maddie’s patrons can choose from menu burgers including the “Oklahoma BBQ” (smashed beef burger with grilled onion, spicy bbq, American cheese, fried onion and pickles—$11), “California” (smashed chicken burger with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, pickles, bacon and avocado—$12), “Mexican” (smashed beef burger with chorizo, tomato, American cheese, avocado, lettuce, raw onion and jalapeno crema—$13), “Breakfast” (smashed burger with American cheese, bacon and fried egg—$12) and “Garden Burger” (zesty garden patty with lettuce, tomato, pickles, avocado, American cheese and Chipotle ranch—$12).
Salads include the Garden (spring mix, carrots, grape tomato, cucumber, red cabbage with balsamic vinaigrette—$11), Caesar (romaine, shaved parmesan, croutons with homemade dressing—$12) and Southwest (romaine, pico, corn salsa, black beans, cheddar cheese, tortilla chips, lime with mango vinaigrette—$12).
Maddie’s offers a 16 oz. milkshake for $7 in four flavors—vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and black & white—as well as one- ($4) or two-scoop ($7) ice cream.
It’s open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, takes online orders here and soon will offer Uber Eats and delivery options, according to its website. Parking for Maddie’s is on Pine Street or in the lot next to the building (on the Sanda’s Cleaners side).
