Police late Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old New Canaan man and charged him with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

At about 8:56 p.m. on June 11, officer were dispatched to a Hidden Meadow Lane home on a report of a domestic dispute between two occupants of the residence, officials said.

Following an investigation, authorities brought the misdemeanor charges, according to a police report.

It isn’t clear what the dispute involved, how it turned physical, whether or how the man is related to the victim or what was the extent of the victim’s injuries. Police declined to provide details, saying the incident was a domestic matter.

Under state law, a person is guilty of disorderly conduct when, with intent to cause inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, engages in fighting or in violent, tumultuous or threatening behavior; or by offensive or disorderly conduct, annoys or interferes with another person, among other reasons.

A person is guilty of third-degree assault, according to state law, when “with intent to cause physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such person or to a third person” or “recklessly causes serious physical injury to another person or “with criminal negligence, he causes physical injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon, a dangerous instrument or an electronic defense weapon.”

Police released the man after he promised to appear Wednesday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
